Introduction of self healing materials.

Introduction:

Here we are going to discuss about self-healing material. Self healing material means materials that can heal themselves in case of damage and protect themselves from major fracture. As we see, the human body has a self healing property. When there is a cut or fracture on the human body, as the time passes the human body keeps recovering or healing it. Self material was discovered in the 21st century. The first international conference on self-healing materials was held in 18-20 April 2007. According to definition, generally self healing materials made by polymers, ceramics and their composites.

What are self healing materials? It is true that not every material can exist forever. The important materials that we use in our lives have to be discarded for many reasons. Some of them are written below…

Defects: Some materials are break suddenly when force (stress and strain) applied and they create tiny cracks and fracture in materials.

Wear property: Most of the case material having wear out due to regular use and it is cause of failure.

To a material scientist, always want to reduce or remove defects and want a perfect material. But after invention of smart materials which has property to self healing means they have very low defects (cracks, sudden failure, fracture etc.) or almost negligible. These materials known as self healing material. That is the basic concept of the “self-healing” material, which we will define as an artificial (synthetic) substance that automatically repair itself like a human body without any external interference or maintenance.

How self healing material work itself?

In general, capsules are used to add in the base material. The content of the capsule may consist of glue or a solvent. In the adhesive, there is also a catalyst present. When there is a force (stress and strain) in the material, then fracture or internal cracks take place inside the material. The simplest approach is for the capsules to release an adhesive that simply fills the crack and binds the material together. The main body of the material is a solid polymer, while the capsules contain a liquid monomer (one of the basic, endlessly repeated units that make up the polymer). When internal cracks occur in the material, the pressure on the capsule also increases, due to which it breaks. The monomer of the capsule is mix with the polymer and self-heal to the material. The strength of the material remains the same as the strength of the original material.

Applications of SHM:

Applications of self-healing materials are expected almost entirely in all industries in future. The very few applications being developed to date are mainly in the automotive, aerospace, and building industries. For example, Nissan Motor Co. Ltd has commercialized world’s first self-healing clear coat for car surfaces.

Use of self healing fiber reinforced polymer composites in aircrafts has grown significantly in the past years. Hollow fibers reinforced composites are a possible solution to recover cracking or damages. Self-healing fiber reinforced polymer composites   have paved its way in space applications.

The construction industry will also find many applications of self-healing materials. For example, In the future, the use of self-healing concrete materials will be more, which will be more earthquake resistance and full of new features.
