What is Artificial Sun?

The artificial sun is nothing but a man-made reactor built on Earth, where nuclear fusion reactions have to be done to produce energy equal to the sun. The main purpose of scientists is to use the energy released from it in human interest. Scientists want to produce as much energy as possible by producing the least amount of carbon on Earth. As we all know that the sun emits energy continuously, whereas the artificial sun is not able to emit energy continuously, so scientist doing experiment to maintain temperature on artificial sun. How Chinese “Artificial Sun” break the world record: On 3 JUNE 2021, The Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak (EAST) fusion reactor designed by China burns at eight times the Sun’s core temperature. The core of the Sun burns at 15 million degrees Celsius by nuclear fusion of hydrogen nuclei into helium, but the reactor reached a plasma temperature of 120 million degree Celsius for 101 seconds and 160 million Celsius for 20 seconds, it’s break the world record.

About the Chinese artificial sun:

The EAST reactor is an advanced nuclear fusion experimental research device located at the Institute of Plasma Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (ASIPP) in Hefei, China. Apart from EAST, China has two other Tokamak reactors namely HL-2A reactor and J-TEXT. it is currently working.

The last time EAST (Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak or HT-7U) held onto a writhing loop of plasma for so long was in 2017, but the temperature only reached a mere 50 million °C.

In 2018, the reactor held gas heated beyond the 100 million degree benchmark regarded as crucial for generating power, but could only sustain the plasma for around 10 seconds.  

In 2020, South Korea’s KSTAR (Korea Superconducting Tokamak Advanced Research) reactor set a new record by maintaining a plasma temperature of over 100 million degrees Celsius for 20 seconds. Now China breaks this record and set new.

How is it work?

Two types of reactions are involve in nuclear reactor such as fusion and fission  but in case of artificial sun only nuclear fusion reactions takes place because sun generate energy due to nuclear fusion process.

For nuclear fusion to occur, tremendous heat and pressure are applied on hydrogen atoms so that they fuse together. The nuclei of tritium and deuterium (both are isotopes of hydrogen) are made to fuse together to create a helium nucleus, a neutron along with a whole lot of energy. The gaseous hydrogen fuel is heated over 150 million degrees Celsius so that it forms hot plasma (electrically charged gas) of subatomic particles.

The plasma is kept away from the walls of the reactor with the help of a strong magnetic field, to ensure it does not cool down and lose its potential to generate large amounts of energy. The plasma is confined for long durations for fusion to take place.

Future aspects:

International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) is a collaboration of 35 nations launched in 1985. The ITER Members include the United States, the European Union, India, Japan, Korea, China and Russia.

It is part of the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) facility, which when commissioned in 2035 will become the world’s largest nuclear fusion reactor. It’s headquarter in France.

Scientists are still studying and experimenting on this because they have maintained 120 million degree Celsius of heat for just 101 seconds and 160 million degree Celsius for 20 seconds, while they want to generate continuous and stable energy such as energy generated by the Sun. Artificial sun projects are the part of International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) facility.

Importance:

The main objective of making artificial sun is to produce as much energy as possible and without generating large quantity of waste. Nuclear fusion process occurs inside reactor which generate large amount of energy, in comparison of nuclear fission process. Unlike fission, fusion also does not emit greenhouse gases and is considered a safer process with lower risk of accidents.

Its main aim is to zero production of carbon dioxide and other harmful gases to the environment.
